BIOMASS

Definition: is biological material from living or recently living organisms which can be used to generate energy or as an organic fertilizer. Biomass also represents a modern form of solar energy storage (for example BIOGAS).
Art. 1 of Annex III of the Italian Decree of the Prime Minister, 08 March 2002, defines the combustible biomass types and sources:

  • Vegetal material deriving from dedicated crops;
  • Vegetal material deriving from exclusively mechanical treatment of agricultural nondedicated crops;
  • Vegetal material deriving from forestry interventions, forest maintenance and pruning;
  • Vegetal material deriving from exclusively mechanical treatment of virgin wood consisting of barks, sawdust, shavings, chips, edgings, billets, granulated and rejected virgin wood, granulated and rejected virgin cork, which are not polluted and fulfil market requirements ;
  • Vegetal material deriving from exclusively mechanical treatment of agricultural products.

In a densely wooded and cultivated land, plant-derived biomass can represent a key energy source, which can reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and the carbon dioxide emissions.
Biomass combustion (for example wood) breaks chemical bonds, releases energy and, when oxygen in the atmosphere combines with carbon, leads to the formation of carbon dioxide, that is a major greenhouse gas. Nevertheless, an equal amount of CO2 is absorbed from the atmosphere by the biomass during its growth. Hence, if burnt plants are replaced with new ones, biomass combustion can be considered carbon neutral.
